Even American craft beer prefers Made in Italy

The complete lines proposed by CFT group – which has recently acquired Rolec, a German Company – have been installed by some influential breweries in the USA.

Its origins date back to 70 years ago, when Rossi & Catelli was born in Parma as a supplier to the food industry of machinery for the transformation process of vegetables, especially tomatoes. The Italian economic boom became a springboard for the Company, which soon became a world leader, allowing the production of tomato puree and concentrate anywhere in the world. And the wave of takeovers has been steady, until the group, CFT, has been established. CFT is the acronym for Catelli Food Technologies, which has closed 2016 with a turnover of about 175 million Euros.

A technological centre

Beverage is a business in which the Group has made its entry in 2010 taking over SBC, one of the most authoritative Companies in the domain of packaging of liquid foods. After acquiring SBC – specialized in the production of machines for bottling water, juices, alcoholic drinks, and so on – CFT decided to give particular attention to breweries, which were proving to be the emerging phenomenon of those years, particularly in the USA.

Emanuele Piva, Beverage Sales & Commercial Director, reminds: «This issue was not new for our Company, as already in the late Nineties SBC had opened with vision a branch in Chicago to provide packaging facilities to craft breweries, which in the United States were born and have proliferated in advance compared to Europe».

The colour rendering

The Group, which is now present in many Countries in the world (the last branch was recently opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), sold its lines to the most important customers of the US craft beer industry, such as Lagunitas, New Belgium, Golden Road, and Harpoon. For many years American craft beers have preferred bottles as containers, despite the ease of use of can, invented precisely in the USA in the mid-30s because of its lightness, cooling capacity, colour rendering in printing, and so on. Piva says: «But a lot has changed in the last three years, during which the major American breweries have begun to appreciate cans precisely for the possibilities they offer to customise the packaging with illustrations, trademarks, and other things, which create far superior visual impact compared to the one that can be reached by the most creative and colourful label».

A consequential step

From packaging systems to process plants for brewing: the step was consequential for CFT. The Company finds its origins just in production systems for the food industry. Hence the decision to offer complete systems, too, to breweries. This systems meet their needs, from grinding cereals to must preparation, from fermentation to final packaging. This is the case of the ones provided at the Dust Bowl brewery near San Francisco, California, and Jack’s Abby near Boston, on the East Coast.

In Italy both machines and equipment provided to Toccalmatto and Ducato breweries, too, which are among the most successful in our Country, are of CFT Group’s.

Now even brew houses, too

The Group will also insist on the proposal of complete plants thanks to the recent acquisition of the German Rolec, a major player in the production of brew houses with special attention to the world of craft beer, to which it provides Made in Germany brew houses, a guarantee of quality. «Very often we have seen German Companies ‘shopping’ in our Country. It is certainly unusual that an entirely Italian Company as our one goes against the current trend, deciding to expand its business proposal by integrating into its Group a German company», Piva rightly points out with an understandable pride of being part of a Company that is among the first ones in Italy to believe in the world of craft beer.
